Waterproofing is spray polyurea.

Nobody is surprised with new words and terms any more, they appear and disappear. However the queer word "polyurea" appeared and has not died out in last decade, it is used more and more often. At first it seems that it is referred to a miraculous fertilizer or disease, God forbid. However the polyurea is not a disease, but quite the opposite. People labouring at health care use this word. Health of those things which are produced and built. Especially it is about those objects, systems and devices which are affected by corrosion or where reliable, long-term and safe waterproofing is required for whole shebang. That makes sense, because polyurea is a polymer coating. Protective polymer coating. Frequency of use of the word "polyurea" is explained simply: This material as a coating deserves very warm words and our clients getting to know closer this material often exclaim: What impressive progress!!!

Polyurea Historical Background.

Reactions being the basis of polymers were found as early as in 1850.  They became of vital importance approximately in the 1930s. To the 1960s urethane direction began to dominate as the most interesting.

Spray polyurea elastomer meets the highest process and operation requirements specified to polymer coatings. Blend composition is based on amino-polyester resins, amino-polymers and isocyanate. The composition provides a reliable, elastic, monolithic membrane with improved water-resistance and protection against chemically active substances influence. 

It is clearly now that waterproofing with polyurea is the most qualitative, long-term and universal method and exactly the polyurea is the main competitor at this market.

Polyurea with additives may have such characteristics as elasticity due to adding of plasticizers, nonflammability due to antipyrenes, increased hardness and wear-resistance due to hardening compounds. Hydrophobizators are added to decrease water absorption, epoxy polyurea is used to increase chemical resistance to aggressive environments. Silicone increases adhesion and elasticity. Obviously it is possible to select material for any goals and tasks. 

A Little Physics or Something About Polyurea Properties.

Rate of polyurea reaction (less than 15 seconds) throws back in times past all acrylic, rubber, polyurethane and epoxide competitors.  

Longitudinal strength is the most important for waterproofing with polyurea.  Polyurethanes have higher stretching property and lower modulus of volume elasticity than polyurea with analogous hardness. Due to success of chemistry the polyureas may stretch much more and keep ability to resist to significant mechanical loading. Very low level of volatile matters makes possibly to use polyurea for restricted working spaces.  Polyurea coat is ideal for the use in food industry premises and in case of contact with potable water. It is also confirmed by certificates. High wear-resistance of polyurea is one more outstanding property. Railway carriages, barges, sea crafts, lorries could say many thanks, if could, that polyurea is used to protect their surfaces. Fire-resistance of polyurea is much higher than polyurethane. Due to its formula polyureas are low susceptible to thermal distortion and whipping. Thereat polyureas keep high impact resistance and flexibility. If polyurea is subject to long-term impact of open fire, then faint burning takes place with small smoke emission, and when external fire stops, self-damping takes place. Long-term stability of polyurea also deserves some words.

Polyurea. Disadvantages.

Here some disadvantages are listed. There are some few disadvantages and they are acceptable more or less taking into account all the advantages. Yes, aromatic polyurea is getting dark influenced by open sun. It does not affect functional performance, but there are cosmetic changes. That is why we offer colors near to black, brown, as well as grey, orange and silver for external polyurea coatings.  In fact this restriction is important when choosing polyurea as a decorative material. In such a case we recommend more light-resistant materials.

Chemical resistance of polyurea may be called moderate. Industrial solvents and concentrated mineral acids destroy polyurea in case of permanent influence. At the same time polyurea is resistant to influence of oil products and waste water and saline solutions, non concentrated alkalis and acids.

Wish to do everything quickly is an understandable wish, but there is a probability to get defects in the form of craters like in the case with any other polymer sprayed on porous substrate without precoating. An it is impossible to cover such defects by ten following layers. We also recommend not to believe in a myth that it is possible to apply polyurea on wet material. Polyurea may excuse small coarseness of preparation, but if you ignore our recommendations and rules of application it is impossible to achieve good adhesion. In other words, to receive reliable and long-term coating and use excellent adhesion of polyurea and metal, concrete, wood, it is necessary to carry out thorough preparatory work.
